Countries: Germany, Austria, Romania, Monaco

Director: Maren Ade

Synopsis: Winfried, an elderly, divorced music teacher from Aachen who loves playing practical jokes, is paid a visit by his sober, career-driven daughter Ines, who is briefly in town from Bucharest, where she works as a corporate strategist for an oil company. But the pair's awkward reunion is incessantly interrupted by Ines’s work and over the course of her visit she becomes increasingly exasperated by her father’s behaviour. After Winfried’s aged dog dies, he flies on a whim to Bucharest to spend time with his daughter who is uncomfortable at the sudden appearance of her father. During his visit, her embarrassment is compounded by the fact that he decides to assume the persona of ‘Toni Erdmann’, a smooth-talking character who variously claims to be a corporate lifestyle coach and the German ambassador. Wearing a wig, a cheap suit and comic false teeth, Toni barges into Ines’ professional life, ambushing and pranking an already stressed Ines at work meetings and social engagements.
